This was a lovely spot. Verwood in Dorset. The New Forest. The New Forest is great for families – such a lot to do, mainly exploring. On the day of our shoot the sun was really out – this is one of those things that the weather makes a big difference – bright direct sun is unflattering and not great for portraiture, yet as long as we’re not in a desert there is usually somewhere out and about that I can use / we can hunt for. The good news about the weather being sunny is that it tends to make us feel happier and we don’t have to have so many layers of clothes on / babies can be outside for longer.
Overcast weather tends to be the best for on-location portraiture as a general rule, but one of the best things about my job is that each day, each family photo session brings it’s own adventures and challenges. Pouring rain is the only weather that I don’t shoot in and even then I have.
In the summer months I might also suggest an early start to try and make the most of the light. That was the case here for this family photography shoot in the New Forest – and the early light was the nicest.
For family photography there is a real balance of comfort, mood, weather and routines that come into play on a shoot / planning a family session. Rest assured I’m experienced enough to offer some suggestions / advice on the shoot and beforehand but also experienced enough to know that we’ll roll with it on the day!
I love this one above. (also quite a fan of the one below)
