Family Photography Questions
Family Photography Common Questions and Answers
Before the Photoshoot
There are lots of questions you might have of your family photographer before the actual photoshoot. Here are some of the most common ones I get asked.
Before the shoot
When is the best time for a photoshoot of my baby?
I have suggested milestones of 10 days and under for newborns, around 3 months and 7 months for babies. These are only suggestions – they co-incide with developmental baby milestones. At three months babies respond to your face and sounds, at seven months babies are sitting comfortably in a tripod stance. But we all develop at different paces and as such apart from Newborns I am happy to take photos at age. I tend to find morning photoshoots a good plan – baby and children’s energy levels are generally better. This may not be the case for everyone – so this is just a suggestion.
What area do you cover?
I cover all of Hampshire, Surrey and some of Dorset, West Sussex and Berkshire. My most popular areas are Southampton, Winchester, Petersfield, Guildford, Godalming, Basingstoke, The New Forest, Chandlers Ford, Alton and Farnham. If you are outside of these areas – do get in touch, I charge affordable travel costs – I do like visiting new places!
I did live and work in Kent – I still have a couple of days a month when I work in Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and Bromley. My availability is limited in Kent but again I would love to hear from you to see if we could arrange something.
When should I book a newborn shoot?
I’m strict about trying to get some newborn photos taken in a babies first ten days. I only book a certain number of newborn shoots per month. I suggest booking a newborn shoot in for around 14 days after your due date. Once you are booked in if baby doesn’t arrive on time (apparently only about 7% of babies are born on the due date) you can get in touch with me and I can move around some of my allocated editing time to fit you in on an alternative date. I like to try and photograph newborns in their first 10 days – this is the best time photographically speaking to capture them asleep and curled up, after two weeks statistically they are more likely to sleep less and sleep less soundly.
Once you are booked in simply get in touch with me the day after your baby arrives. Alternatively if baby hasn’t arrived a few days before this provisionally booking get in touch so we can decide whether to keep that date or reschedule.
Is my home suitable? It’s … too small, dark, not to our tastes, being renovated?
I think a lot of us would like a large, glamorous, bright and airy / clean and tidy house. If you are lucky and have some of those qualities in your home, great. If not it shouldn’t matter too much, for newborns and babies – I only need a small space. I consider myself mainly a natural light photographer, but I have a HUGE “movieset” type lamp and flashguns to make even the darkest house a usable space for your photos. Although do please speak to me if you have any particular concerns about the light in your home.
I often work around renovations, it’s common for clients to need more space and be in the middle of moving, or part renovating. Of course just use common sense, some renovations mean your home is dusty or otherwise unsuitable for babies or children.
Offending wallpaper or decor – with the right lighting the offending decor can be dulled right down / become dark or black. Wider views of your home could be avoided and instead we might focus on closer more intimate shots.
For the summer months, Babies, Toddlers and Children I would suggest choosing to have the whole of part of the shoot out and about at a location that means something to you and your family. Being able to get out and do something is more fun. For babies, I’d suggest that having a venue with some heated indoor space (a pub?) definitely makes sense, babies need to be warm. Being snuggled up can be sweet for some photos but it’s harder to see your babies face and features.
Do you have a studio?
No. I’m a predominantly natural light photographer working on-location. Either in your own home, garden, neighbourhood or on locations such as the seaside or woods, or anywhere. I want to capture real memories for your family in meaningful settings. I do carry additional lighting with me – in the winter months, we might use a “movie set” type light.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes! You can purchase photography gift vouchers available as a physical voucher or evoucher. Great for any occasion. I find that my photography vouchers work best if the recipient is aware of my pricing (so there are no hidden surprises) my packages are popular choices rather than just the shoot cost.
